The future delivered: News from Trading Communications - Global Banking and Financial Markets, BT

Boom time for Latin America

Howard Boville

Everything is finally coming together for Latin America to move centre stage in the world of finance. The macro-economic situation is superb and GDP growth is healthy; interest rates have been low for sometime and a burgeoning middle class is fuelling the need for mortgages, credit cards and loans to business. There's room for more growth too: deposits in banks still only represent a small percentage of the economy. Domestic financial institutions are enjoying a home field advantage, kick-starting interest from other market players. In Mexico four out of the top five banks are foreign, and in Brazil the US-based alternative trading venue BATS Global Markets is looking to challenge the state monopoly by building a new stock exchange.

Spain is taking a lead in the region, but others will soon follow. It is likely that a careful mix of critical mass and local knowledge will be needed to act as a spring to the overall economy. The growth of some key sectors, such as housing, infrastructure and consumer durables, will depend on the availability and cost of bank financing. But one thing is certain: Latin America is set to become an increasing source of bank profits in future, and with our large presence in 22 countries via 180 satellite and MPLS points of presence, we can help you build business in the region.
